Activities to Improve Balance

It is important for children to work on their balance and coordination in order to meet developmental milestones and support their confidence and independence. Here are a few fun activities that you can do with your child to improve their balance!

Bubbles

  • Blow bubbles and catch them on the wand. Have your child pop them with one foot while balancing on the other foot. The higher you hold the wand, the longer they have to balance!

Clean Up

  • Have your child pick up puzzle pieces or marbles without using their hands. Have them place them in a bucket. Make it harder by using a laundry basket!

Ring Toss

  • Stand on one foot to catch a tossed ring OR pick up a ring that is laying on the floor with one foot and gently place it on the post.

Bowling

  • Line up all 10 pins to the bowling game and have your child knock them down one at a time without putting that foot down.

Tight Rope

  • Walk across a 2x4 without falling off! Make it harder by carrying a bean bag on their head, or a tray with play food items on it.

Pop Up

  • Have your child close all the “doors” of a pop up toy with their feet while balancing on the other foot.

Hopscotch

  • Play hopscotch! Make sure to draw squares or use a mat that supports your child moving from one foot to two and back to the opposite foot.

King of the Mountain

  • Throw several pillows or couch cushions on the floor and play catch with a ball or balloon. Your children can stand on the pillows or cushions which challenges their balance. Throw the ball high, low, and side to side to keep them switching between planes of movements.
