Play Activities Indoors

As we are finding ourselves indoors more often as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, physical movement is still an important activity to make a part of your day. There are many benefits to supporting your child in moving their body everyday. It helps with healthy growth and development, builds strong bones, improves balance, and helps maintain and develop flexibility.

Here are a few ideas of ways to get your child moving indoors:

  • Yoga

    • Improves balance

    • Improves flexibility

    • Helps kids de-stress and reduce feelings of anxiety

    • Teaches breath control for relaxation

    • Provides opportunity to improve ability to follow directions

  • Obstacle courses

    • Practice problem solving skills to come up with ideas

    • Encourage teamwork with peers/ siblings to set up the course

    • Your child can easily use pillows , blankets, cushions as obstacles

    • Practice balance walking in uneven surfaces

    • Encourages turn taking

    • Create tunnels with furniture and blankets

    • Use a puzzle or matching game to give each pass through the obstacle course a purpose

  • Dance Party

    • Play music and dance!

    • Try to remain active 30-60 minutes

    • Use a visual countdown timer to track time

  • Scavenger Hunt

  • Exercise

    • Parents who love exercise have kids who love exercise

    • Ride bikes outdoors

    • Walk/run

    • Play hopscotch
