Back to School Letter to the Teacher

With the new school year about to begin, we, as parents, may be feeling anxious and scared of the changes that we could face with a new teacher, a new school, new friendships, and new routines. Many of our children struggle with changes in routine and structure, and as a result, react differently during these first few weeks of school.

To support our children for emotional and academic success, it may be beneficial to take a few moments to write a letter to your child's teacher to introduce them to the amazing child they will be working with this school year. This letter gives us an opportunity to share our child's strengths and positive attributes, as well as open the lines of communication in regards to the IEP or 504 accommodations that best meet your child's individual needs. We, as parents, know what our children respond to best. For example, a child may benefit from praise, frequent breaks, a quiet space, or an opportunity for movements. In writing this letter, you are giving your teacher the opportunity to view your child through your eyes. It gives you the chance to further share the knowledge you have gained as the parent of an exceptional child, as well as any strategies previous teachers have found to be most effective.

Attached you’ll find a few helpful examples to create your own.
